Augusta and Waterville sit on the Kennebec River. Rockland and Belfast face Penobscot Bay. They are four small cities with four different rhythms, and the animals in them have one thing in common: most are calmest in their own homes.

We come to you, so your pet keeps its own bed, its own yard and its own schedule while you are away. Dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs and other rodents, reptiles, fish and livestock are all welcome.

Why home beats the kennel run

Many owners start by looking at daycare or a kennel. A busy, noisy place can suit some dogs, but it carries risks. You may know and trust your own dog and still not know the others in the room, and that is how fights and illness start. One-on-one care in your home takes those risks off the table.

For cats and small animals the case is even simpler. A strange room and strange smells are stress they don’t need. A reptile stays in the enclosure you already set up, and we check its temperature and humidity against your numbers, not just the food bowl. A fish gets exactly the amount of food you specify.

What your pet gets from us

  • Overnight sitting: we arrive at 7pm and stay to 9am, and you get a photo before bed and another in the morning.
  • Drop-ins: 15 minutes to an hour or more for meals, water, a midday potty break, medication at a set time, or play for a cat home alone.
  • Dog walks: for all sizes, from puppies learning the leash to seniors who take hills slowly, with one household at a time and paws wiped afterward.
  • Constant care: someone with the pet the whole time, for puppies, elderly animals, recovery after surgery, tight medication schedules or big packs, where paying per animal gets costly.
  • Boarding: your pet lives in a sitter’s home and sleeps in the house, with a meet and greet first.

Every pet starts with a free meet and greet at your home. Your pet meets us before the first booking, and nothing is booked until you are comfortable. We go over feeding, medications, where things are, which door the dog bolts out of and what your pet is nervous about.

After every visit you get a photo and a text. We are fully insured, CPR and pet first-aid certified, with 18 years of experience that began in animal shelters and pet stores.

One state law, many town rules

Maine law makes it unlawful for a dog to be at large, but there is no state rule on picking up after your dog, so every city writes its own. In this region that means leash lengths from 6 to 8 feet, dog parks where leashes come off, and a few parks that close to dogs in summer.

We learn the rules for the places your dog walks, so you don’t have to worry about a fine on top of everything else.

A river trail between the cities

The Kennebec River Rail Trail runs along the river from Augusta through Hallowell and Farmingdale to Gardiner, and leashed pets are welcome on it. For a dog who loves a long, flat, predictable walk, it is a good one.

Browntail season

The Maine Forest Service lists April to July as the riskiest time for browntail moth caterpillar hairs. Animals are less affected than people, but bare spots like the belly and muzzle can react, so it’s worth a look after spring walks.

Ticks are a year-round habit to watch for. Maine CDC advises checking pets after time outdoors, and so do we.

No. Maine law says dogs can't run at large, but each city sets its own leash length and pick-up rules. Each town page lists the local rules for its parks and trails.

At one of our two homes: Lindsay's lively Milford home, with pets of her own, or our quieter Portland home, with far fewer animals. Either way your pet lives in the house with the household and sleeps indoors, not in a kennel run. We'll tell you honestly which suits your pet.

For many pets, yes. In a busy daycare you may trust your own dog but you don't know every dog enrolled that day, and that is where fighting and disease can start. At home with one-on-one care those risks are gone, and your pet keeps its own bed, its own yard and its own schedule.

Older animals, disabled animals and special-needs pets are all welcome. We give medication at the times you set, and for animals who can't be left alone we offer constant care, with someone there the whole time, working from your vet's written instructions. We go over all of it at the free meet and greet.
